French Open 2026: Round of 16 Preview for 22 October
The YONEX French Open 2026 moves into the round of 16 on Thursday, 22 October, as players across all five badminton disciplines compete for places in the quarter-finals. The tournament is taking place at Arena Grand Paris, with Malaysian players hoping to continue their campaigns against strong international opposition.
After two days of opening-round action, the pressure increases. One defeat means elimination, while a win brings players closer to a place in Friday’s quarter-finals.
Malaysia’s Players Face an Important Test
Malaysia’s men’s doubles campaign has produced encouraging results. Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin progressed after defeating Denmark’s Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 in their opening match.
Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King also advanced after overcoming the United States’ Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith 21-18, 18-21, 21-12. Their next challenge is especially demanding, with the Malaysian pair set to face top seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea.
In mixed doubles, professional pair Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing continued their strong form by recovering from a game down to beat China’s Gao Jiaxuan and Wu Mengying 14-21, 21-15, 21-15.
What to Watch in the Round of 16
The second round will test each player’s ability to recover quickly and adapt to different opponents. Doubles matches can turn on service returns, defensive coordination and short attacking exchanges, while singles players need patience and consistency to control longer rallies.
For Malaysian fans, the key question is whether the pairs that made strong starts can carry that momentum into the knockout stage. The level of opposition will rise as the draw narrows.
